Hello Blog Readin' People,
Well, here we are again!! It's Blog time! And this is Margret, opening up the entries for our annual trip! This year, we think we've got a new lead on the location of Virginia Dare, and so, instead of heading south, we're going north to continue our investigation. And of course, there is a completely scientific reason for our destination change!
Here's how it all went down:
First of all, if you know anything about the Roanoke Colony, you know they all mysteriously disappeared, with nothing left except for the word "CROATAN" carved in a tree. (Creepy, I know.) So after weeks of analyzing this word earlier in the year, I discovered a lead we decided to follow.
It it started off like this:
I had written the word "CROATAN" and it had been staring me in the face for hours, but I didn't have one idea. Then finally, inspiration struck. After chugging a whole coffee, I started to take apart the letters and putting them back together. I ended up with the symbols circled in Green at the very top of the diagram. (See Diagram above). I put them together and got this: "P(backwards)C(backwards)OONOZ"
My First Thought: "Another false lead."
My Second Thought: "Maybe the symbols are Greek..."
My Third Thought: "Where's my Greek to English dictionary..."
I spent weeks searching through that dictionary until I realized that the symbols looked like English letters. So I took a break to think. I took my imaginary dog for a walk, stared at the wall, watched paint dry... and then it hit me! They were letters in an anagram! (Anagrams are letters in a word mixed up and can be rearranged with a little thought.) I ended up with the only word that made sense, "POCONOZ". (But of course the "P" and "C" were backwards.)
(Other tries to the anagram: ZONCOPO, COPONOZ, and CAT.)
It looked a lot like "POCONOS", which of course is a mountain range in Pennsylvania, and the name of a Native American tribe.
So, I reversed the "P" and "C", changed the "Z" to an "S", and ended up with "POCONOS."
The only conclusion to make was either the members of the Lost Colony all moved to the Poconos, of they were killed by the Pocono Indians. So, our unanimous decision was to go there and find out!
So here we are now, preparing for our trip to the Poconos. We're leaving Saturday!
Keep Readin,
Margret
